  Re “At Struggling Rural Colleges, No Future for History Degrees” (front page, Jan. 13):

  This is not just a function of declining enrollments. When conservative governors and state legislatures like those in Wisconsin reduce funding to state universities from 50 percent to 17 percent, what do you expect will happen to enrollments?

  This is one aspect of conservatives’ efforts to cut public funding across the board. I have seen this trend toward reduced state funding and narrowly conceived “career oriented” education at universities that are not in rural areas. Free higher education for all would fill those rural universities and might even restore economic prosperity to rural America.

  A liberal arts education — not narrowly tailored technical education — is the best preparation for an economy that requires a flexible work force and a democracy that requires intelligent and critically thinking voters.

  In eliminating majors in French, German and history, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is sending a message that students at regional public universities do not deserve the same opportunities as those who attend the state’s flagship campus or private institutions.

  Students at regional public universities are largely first-generation college students, students from families of modest means and in many cases students of color. To offer those students only narrow vocational study is to reinforce the notion that the liberal arts, and especially the humanities, are reserved for the elite.

  Language study especially pays dividends in the job market for undergraduates, while broadening students’ sense of the world and its possibilities, producing the ability to understand, appreciate and work with national and cultural differences.

  Students at regional universities may choose to major in business, but they should be able to double-major in French or German or history as well.

  The situation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was altogether predictable. When relatively few young people continued their education beyond high school in the past, possession of a degree in any major from an accredited school was enough to distinguish them.

  But today the market is flooded with degree holders. As a result, marquee-name colleges and universities have a big advantage in attracting applicants that other schools cannot possibly match. That is particularly the case as tuition and associated costs continue to skyrocket in higher education.

  I read with great sadness about the financial problems facing the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. As a Wisconsinite in exile, I know only too well the benefit local universities provide to both students and their communities.

  What would my adolescent life in Superior, Wis., have been like without two local branches of state schools and a local Catholic university? Where would I have seen my first live theater? Learned to play the harp? Attended faculty recitals?

   Rural schools with broad curriculums benefit both the students who attend them and the broader communities they serve. Shame on former Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican leaders over the years who have ignored the state education system and allowed these institutions to founder.

   If there is any hope for a resurgence in rural America, it is by funding the humanities, not acting without humanity.
